Always On The Lookout

This weekend I was in sunny Philadelphia to celebrate 25 years with friends. We kicked off the first night at Fergies, a bar in center city, for a free show featuring Philadelphia's own, Chang Chang, and Faux Slang. Chang Chang, is a talented emcee on the rise. Since introducing us to his music project a few months ago he has played numerous shows in Philly, SXSW, and stays on his grind by going to NYC to participate in open mics whenever he gets a chance. As a friend I can honestly say that I am so proud of homeboy! Expect big things from him.


"FAUX SLANG is three piece outfit that has been active in the Philadelphia area since late 2006. Their beer-battered sound blends post-punk with space-rock while drawing a heavy influence from 60's pop." (via Myspace) The band consists of Rick Hass on lead vocals and keyboards, Ian Nauroth on guitar and backup vocals, and Adam Herndon on drums. Definitely a fun band to watch, their songs are catchy, and they put a lot of energy into their performance. Just give me indie rock!


I can't talk about a trip to the city without reppin' my crew from Omoi. Much love to Liz, Grace, Remi, and Bogdan. I've had my eye on this jacket from Hellz Bellz Renegades of Funk collection:

The overlapping collar is removable and it also unfolds into a fierce hood. So versatile, love it. The best part, like most things, is on the inside.

In other shop news, the boys from Fresh Melt Water have done it again. They opened their first retail outlet in the Northern Liberties section of Philadelphia. Affectionately dubbed, No Libs, like 90% of everything in Philly, is an up and coming area filled with an interesting range of shops, restaurants, bars, and most recently, a beautiful Piazza. The Piazza is located in the center of the art deco condos around 2nd and Poplar. New independent stores are being added and it looks promising. I mean if the Jumbotron on the wall facing all of the Piazza doesn't do it for you, then stick to Rittenhouse. (Boring) Here is Andrew, Brooks, and Joey, reppin' their set at the new shop. Philadelphia is full of crafty and interesting people. On Sunday, my lovely friend Amanda sent me a text to come out to the Independent Craft Fair that she was participating in with fellow artist, Kat Gun. I had a blast with them. The free PBR offered with the $2 entry was certainly a score. Also notable, I ran into a former instructor I had at the Art Institute, Gretchen Diehl. Her jewelry was so incredible that before I could get 20ft into the venue my friend, Lauren, and I were buying necklaces from her Birdqueen collection. I got this one:

We love Bob and Barbara's. I haven't been down in a minute but every time we go back we get spoiled. I won at Bingo! I never win. Unfortunately, I didn't win any raunchy porn or Bob Dix prints. I was really feelin the furry handcuffs, but my girl Amanda got those. Instead I won the mystery prize. The mystery was an Official PB&J sandwich, most likely made by Bingo Bob himself, a Powerpuff girls beanie, and a Special. Hey, I'm not complainin'. Our table won a total of three times which is pretty damn amazing. I think it was the bobble head frog Lucky gave us to sit on our table. There is no place like Bob and Barbara's in the city of Philadelphia. I mean, where can you play dirty Bingo, watch Butchie smack his ass as he dances to the 'Gravel Pit', get free tees, talk sports, learn some Spanish, and drink for CHEAP? There is always a dope collection of DVD's Lucky keeps stashed away. This week he let me borrow 'Bomb It' a documentary of sorts of graffiti around the world. OK so I just popped it in and it won't play. You can't win em all. Ah Philadelphia how I love you.

Home away from home. This Monday is DSB, or Drunken Spelling Bee. It's a fun time, actually it gets pretty packed now, people get really rowdy and kinda obnoxious. Then they try spellin shit and you want to punch them. I mean, if your into that sort of thing. I know I end up there often, mostly cuz Scotty is the man. First and third Mondays, monthly.

So Wednesdays at Bob and Barbara's are Bingo Bob's chance to humiliate any competitive spirit facing the fate of the randomness of the Bingo Ball shaker...welcome to my world. After months and months of playing I finally won last week. Go figure, I won a bunch of raunchy porn that doesn't mildly turn me on. However, I did win a strawberry patched denim cell phone case that I 'forgot' at the bar...I was on a roll last week. Yet, the bonehead I was with called 'BINGO' when he didn't have it and had to buy Bob a shot. What a retard. Sorry love, but it's true. We take bar games rules serious...Anyway another round is underway tomorrow nite. Our girl Ang is working at the Tritone, with Papaya bartending across the street. He makes some stiff dranks, and I Loves it. Yes, loves it. Oh and if your reading this today and weren't at BNB's tonight, you missed Hip Hop tuesdays with DJ LEXX. God Damn. Everything from the Jackson's to Wu Tang. Friends rhymin' on the front stoop, smokin butts, gettin down to Slick Rick, B.I.G, (my personal fucking favorite), and LEXX must love me. Cuz he weaves in that mix tape shit with one of my main mangs, METHOD MAN. I know one of his babies ma's. You know this one biddy bop from my home spot. OOPS??? did i say that out loud? Drunken Spelling Bee! This Monday and every FIRST Monday of the month at Bob and Barbara's. We have never made it past the first round but we play anyway. $3 specials of P-B-R. BNB'S just got Best Bar, Best Special, and Best Drag Show in the City paper AND one of the nation's Best Dive Bar's in Maxim!! and it's right at 15th and South. Where the crowd always pleases.
